Do you have any details of the Twittergate scandal? I've not heard of it.

The NRL and AFL might actually have more players. It might just be hard to identify them as they may not appear on lists that people have compiled of players and accounts interested in those teams. Considering how many players there are though, it does look a bit small... though as more Australians are apparently on Facebook, I am not necessarily surprised. Compared to the US, there is a much smaller possible population and less penetration by the service. If we were looking at Facebook, some of this might be a bit different. (Though with Facebook, you have to agree to be friends, so the total people would likely be much smaller. I just think the total number of athletes would be higher.)

I think the major Australian sports are missing a trick with twitter. When you compare those numbers with Australian cyclists like for example Robbie McEwen 30,758, Cadel Evans 27,047, Simon Gerrans 8,911 even a relative unknown like Brett Lancaster 3,461 would be near the top of the list. Yet it seems AFL and NRL players are discouraged (judging by the numbers on there) from having a frank twitter account. I think the Phil Hughes twittergate "scandal" has set back the Australian online sporting landscape by a couple of years at least.
