Stephanie Rice versus Lauren Jackson vs Natalie Cook on Wikipedia
In my continuing random exploration of Australian women at the Olympics and Wikipedia…
… Lauren Jackson carried the flag during the Opening Ceremonies earlier today Australian time. With stats having been posted at around noon AEST, Jackson’s Wikipedia article had 15,203 views compared to Stephanie Rice who had yet to swim but was scheduled to (and did) swim this evening who had 9,322 views on the day and for added perspective, Natalie Cook who was talked about as a potential flag carrier had 994 views today. Here, flag carrying appears to have played a major factor in Lauren Jackson’s relative increase in popularity. For perspective, n the past 30 days , Jackson had 37740 views, Rice had 85525 views, and Cook had 9565 views.
What was the linking like for these articles? On Google+, none of the three had public mentions. Two people linked to Lauren Jackson today. No one linked to Rice or Cook. I went over to Icerocket to compare the three women to see mentions to Wikipedia. It looks like there were two mentions on blogs about Lauren Jackson and Wikipedia today, with none for Rice or Cook.
After this, I looked at Google Trends.
Why does this matter? Wikipedia Google Rankings for these articles. I went over to Google, logged out and searched for the names of all three women on google.com and then verified using a Google SERP tool. Stephanie Rice’s Wikipedia page is second, behind her official page. Lauren Jackson is first. Natalie Cook’s Wikipedia page is second behind her official page. Given what appears to be the sheer volume of search traffic for both and the knowledge that most people do not go beyond the first page, it suggests there is a large possibility of traffic conversion to Wikipedia for these terms.
To give some Facebook perspective, Stephanie Rice has 102,540 Australians interested in her, Natalie Cook has 680 Australians interested in her and Lauren Jackson has 2,900 Australians interested in her.
