Not surprised the Bon Jovi fans were busy tagging themselves instead of watching the show. I’m not too up on Foursquare’s information sharing but have seen plenty of Facebook Places mentions from friends over the past month from sports venues (Wildcats @ Challenge Stadium, Melbourne Victory @ AAMI Park), though I guess they are together for outsiders to track.
Have you noticed whether clubs are encouraging the Foursquare or FB Places interaction eg. web banners, PA broadcasts at games etc and if so, whether it works?

I’m not seeing many people checking in on Facebook places for me. I’ve just had huge issues getting the pages for it to load. :/ If I could figure out how to get a list of locations, I could probably see if I could do a similar list for Facebook places. (And Gowalla.) It just requires that you can view the page with out being logged in.

I’ve only really attended a WNBL game and a roller derby recently. They didn’t promote Foursquare at all. I talked to the Canberra Raiders and the Canberra United about Foursquare. Neither were really familiar with the concept of geolocation networks. I don’t know that they’d see the value. The best example of active use that I’ve seen is the MCG who tried to get a swarm badge during the season. (That worked.) The Melbourne Vixens have also tried Foursquare, checking in at events and having those checkins show on their Twitter stream. I’m just not certain how success could be measured as an outsider unless they had publicly stated their institutional goals and those goals were measurable by outsiders.

My understanding, based on a conversation with an acquaintance who has done some work in this space is that Foursquare is hard to measure. If you’ve got a coupon, you can count how many times it has been used but you can’t get daily totals.

Beyond that, American sport teams appear to have had some success with using Foursquare and Gowalla.

True of the FB places point, I had a look back and it was the same three people checking in at various games over the past few months! So not a great quantifier.
I haven’t been to an NBL game since Perth in 1998 but been to few Vixens games in 2007-8 and can see potential there for Foursquare checkins. Venue-based checking in may be more popular that just teams asking people to Foursquare (is that a verb yet? if not, I just made it one)

Noticed that the Brisbane Roar official account was checking in on Foursquare. Foursquare also recently added picture uploading.

No clue what the verb for geolocation services is.
