Anna Meares: Twitter growth in response to gold

This entry was posted by on Monday, 6 December, 2010 at

In case you missed it, Anna Meares won three gold medals at the Melbourne World Cup, including won in the 500m time trial where she beat Sandie Clair of France.  This gold medal performance appears to have resulted in an increased amount of interest in the cyclist on Twitter. The slope of the line for follower acquisition in the period between November 28 to December 1 was 4.5.  The period between December 1 and December 5 was 11.25.  On a graph, this looks like:

Twitter growth for Anna Meares

It would be interesting to see if this pattern held for other gold medal winners in Australian sport.

    I would be interested too!

Anna Meares won more gold medals than nations did (including Great Britain – the British-Australian cycling rivalry has been a big focus in the coverage of the Melbourne World Championships).

And it would be interesting to see if, and for how long, the pattern holds.

(I have followed Meares more or less since the 2004 Athens Olympics, and Oenome Wood too. The roads and trials are both really interesting, but have quite different sporting cultures).

In another 10 days or so, I might have the data to compare where her regional fanbase is on Twitter and see if I can find any noticable difference in location patterns.

The UK certainly looks like they’ve decided to focus on winning gold for the next Olympics.
