The graph below compares the historical Australian Alexa rank for the official Essendon site and an Essendon Bombers fansite.  It confirms the idea that their traffic peaks during the season and slowly increases during the preseason.

Evidence of growth of a fandom: Gold Coast Suns on ebay.com.au

Posted by on Friday, 18 February, 2011

The Gold Coast Suns announced their team name in 2010.  They will play in the AFL this year for the first time.  It is interesting to try to watch the growth of the fan community and interest around the club.  Recently, I’ve been getting some data from ebay.com.au as I’m curious about patterns for listing items about sport around events that take place in the community.  I believe I referenced some of this data in my St Kilda nude photo scandal chapter.

I was looking through some of this data and found what appears to be an interesting pattern for the Gold Coast Suns on ebay.com.au, for the search term Gold Coast Suns.

If you ignore the fourth of January, which is still part of the holiday season in Australia, the total number of items for the teach has increased over time.   It looks like there appears to be more materials available to list, possibly people who think that more people are interested in buying Gold Coast Suns related items, etc.  It suggests that the team’s fan base is gearing up in preparation for the season and probably suggests good things for the team.

2011 Cricket World Cup: Foursquare Checkins to date

Posted by on Friday, 18 February, 2011

Back during the men’s soccer World Cup, I gathered data about the total checkins to the event on Foursquare. This ended up as a chapter in my dissertation, titled “Socceroo fans at the World Cup: Foursquare and Gowalla Checkins“.

I decided to get similar data for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. I don’t know how often I’ll update this. (I’m sadly not as reliable as I could be and I worry about too much heavy data dumping.) This post has the data presented in three ways: Raw data, average checkins by location by country, ranking of total checkins by team.

Checkins by country could probably be an issue as infrastructure and local foursquare usage in the host country could skew total checkins to make comparing teams difficult. This is total checkins. Some of the Indian venues have multiple listings. I’ve just totaled them, rather than averaged.

Country Total checkins Total people
India 13 10
Bangladesh 2 1
Sri Lanka 1 1

This gives an idea as to what matches people are checking in to by national team.  I don’t feel particularly surprised that the host nations so far mostly lead or account for other teams by total checkins.
